Curiosity - 5"x5" painting
A curious yellow-green moth with a lively striped pattern, painted on a deep green background, has his eyes on a sparkling jewel hanging over his head. Signed and hand-stamped with the word curiosity on the top edge of the canvas. Wrapped in a blue vintage millinery ribbon that matches the moth's stripes, and embellished with a unique hand-wired, beaded bauble hanging from the top.
This painted insect is a specimen from my Notes to Self collection, my own cabinet of curiosities, inspired by antique book illustrations of the natural world & the collections of entomologists. Each insect specimen represents one of my own “wonders of the world,” concepts such as magic and mystery, emotions like joy, physical phenomenons like sunlight - these are the dreamy things that I don’t want to forget when times are tough. I’ve painted each insect in a way that conjures the feeling of these things for me, and hand-stamped the word that inspired the painting onto it.
