In this piece, I played with the dynamic relationship between the bold, sunlit oranges and pinks of the bouquet and the cool, frosty blues of the dusty miller leaves, using each color family as a foil to amplify the other. One of my favorite details to paint was the refraction of the stems submerged in the water of the vase. It's a subtle element that makes a big impact, while the rich plum tone of the glass pulls out the quiet, underlying violet hues throughout the surrounding foliage. To add more sensory interest to the composition, I focused on the interplay of textures, balancing the soft, layered rose petals against the crisp, pointed edges of the carnations.
